The International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies is being held in Eastern Canada in 2011
WHO WILL GATHER: Thought leaders and visionaries from all four sectors of the Companion Animal Industry.
WHAT WILL THEY DISCUSS: Animal Health & Wellness in our communities.
WHERE WILL IT BE HELD: The beautiful Fairmont Chateau Montebello, Quebec
WHY:
- The health issues faced by an aging human population are also appearing in the pet population.
- Those who claim standing as health and wellness practitioners may or may not be certified and adhering to acceptable standards of practice.
- The cost of providing pet health services is rising, yet the levels of medical insurance to pay for these services in our communities is not keeping pace.
- The future brings the promise of new technologies, new innovations in prophylactic health care, nutrition management and an understanding of how genomic applications will contribute to a healthier pet population.
Of course there are also social aspects to identify and understand, such as:
- future implications of the human animal bond,
- the inherent value of pets in our communities,
- the delivery of health services using a not-for-profit model and,
- the impact of various belief systems on pets in the community.
Finally, no discussion of Animal Health and Wellness would be complete without illuminating the transfer of diseases between animals and people that must be a component of our strategies to maintain a healthy community for pets and people.
