In March of 2010 the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) conducted an in-house survey of its breeder community. 2009 ended with a significant drop in dog registrations and CKC wanted to find out why.
The survey centred on breeders with registered dogs in 2008 who saw a drop in the number of dogs registered with CKC in 2009. It examined breeder attitudes and perceptions to the factors affecting their breeding programs.
What did breeders believe was the reasons behind the drop in their registrations from 2008 to 2009?
As well, the survey attempted to determine what breeder attitudes were going into 2010 – would they be breeding or had events taken their toll.
At the core of the inquiry was: why these breeders registered fewer dogs in 2009; was it a result of the recession? Could there be competition from other breeders? Was interest in purebred dogs waning?
Joe Mauro has been part of the companion animal industry for 17 years; the last six as CEO of Canada’s largest dog registry – the Canadian Kennel Club. Joe worked his way through the ranks of the CKC, starting his career as a special assistant to the CEO, progressing on to Operations Manager, Marketing Manager, and Director of Operations before becoming the ‘top dog’.
Prior to joining the companion animal industry, Joe spent time in politics and fundraising; he has over 21 years in non-profit management. A creative thinker, Joe is tasked with expanding the scope of the CKC and ensuring it is relevant in a collaborative environment within a changing industry. Joe holds an Honours degree in Political Science from the University of Waterloo and a Business Admin degree from Brock University.
